Tomato and onion salad

This is a spicy South African salad traditionally known as kachoomer, it is served with meat, chicken and fish.

  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 5 ml salt
  • 500 ml hot water
  • 2 large ripe tomatoes
  • 2 chillies, chopped
  • 10 ml sugar
  • 30 ml white vinegar
  • coriander
  1. Sprinkle onion with salt. Pour hot water over it and leave to soak for 5 minutes then drain in a colander, squeezing out all excess moisture.
  2. Add all remaining ingredients, toss to mix and add chopped coriander
